u is the 21st letter of the english alphabet. it came from a letter which the semitic peoples of syria and palestine called waw. waw was also the soruce of the letters F, V, W, Y. the word waw meant hook, and was represented by a symbol of a tenthook. the symbol was probably borrowed from an egyptian hierolyphic, or picture symbol.
